Product Description

Widely recognized as a market leader for its innovation, strong research base, and accessibility, the ninth

edition of William L. Heward’s Exceptional Children: An Introduction to Special Education continues this

tradition of excellence.

A FOCUS ON EXCEPTIONAL TEACHERS

• Featured Teacher essays Each chapter begins with a first-person essay by master teachers that

reflects the joys, challenges, and realities of teaching exceptional children. Drawn from urban,

suburban, and rural school districts across the country, the 18 featured teachers share personal

experiences and wisdom gathered from years of instructing children in a variety of school settings.

• MyEducationLab Access to MyEducationLab for this text allows readers to see, hear, and

learn from the teachers featured in the text through video. Throughout the book,

MyEducationLab icons connect key content and concepts practiced by master teachers to

Homework & Exercises on MyEducationLab.

• Tips for Beginning Teachers Each chapter culminates with practical, quick tips for beginning

teachers–offered by the master teacher featured in each chapter–on how to avoid common

pitfalls in the classroom.

A FOCUS ON EFFECTIVE RESEARCH-BASED PRACTICES

• Teaching & Learning features All of the strategies described in the Teaching & Learning features

are classroom-tested, supported by research, and provide clear and practical step-by-step

guidelines for designing, implementing, and evaluating instruction for students with disabilities.

• MyEducationLab Each of the research-based practices discussed in the Teaching & Learning

features are connected to Homework & Exercises or Building Teaching Skills activities in

MyEducationLab that extend and further develop these strategies through video, artifacts,

or articles.

A FOCUS ON ISSUES AND TRENDS

• Current Issues and Future Trends features These essays highlight the ever-changing nature of

special education with the controversial issues, triumphs, struggles, and interventions involved in

special education.

For Future Preparation and Teacher Certification:

• CEC Performance-Based Standards The Common Core standards are printed on the inside front

cover of the text. Margin notes throughout the text link critical content to specific knowledge and

skill statements from CEC’s Performance-Based Standards for Beginning Teachers.

• Coverage of PRAXIS IITM Tests A PRAXIS Study Grid in the Appendix shows where content areas

of the PRAXIS II Test, Education of Exceptional Students: Core Principles, are discussed in the text.

A listing of the principles is on the inside back cover of this text.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for TExES content exam   August 29, 2010
Shameka Agassi
I used this book to study for the TExES Special Education EC-12 content exam in TX. The result was amazing because I was able to ace almost every portion of the exam except for the curriculum section. Curriculum is something they need to work on but this book goes in direct line with the exam as I was told by the Region 4 ACP employee. If anyone is going to study for the content exam then they need to use this book. This book is a great reference once you are in the field of education as well because it gives great insight on dealing with a childs' behavior.

4 out of 5 stars Heward, 8th edition   June 29, 2010
Low C Jazzer
Professor William Heward, Ed.D., has been revising this seminal text book for nearly 30 years. The 8th edition contains many interesting personal professional insights from special educators around the country as well as clear and concise descriptions of every eligibility category of disability under IDEA (Individual with Disabilities Education Act). With references to CEC (Council for Exceptional Children) standards and practices, the reader will obtain an excellent grounding in basic special education law, pedagogy, and philosophy. Highly recommended for all special educators and students of public education at the bachelor and master's level.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Children: An Introduction to Special Education   June 22, 2010

Book was in good condition. Book was in the condition that the seller described. I ordered need this because I need for this course that I am taking in the summer. I am hoping for my teacher certification but not in this category. So this course is required for the certification program.

3 out of 5 stars Frustrating   April 3, 2010

This book is confusing to read and get information out of. The chapters are littered with informative vignettes, but there are so many, and the publisher has done so little to separate them from the main text, that it distracts from the reading. Looking through the table of contents, it appears to have a logical and consistent format, but in practice the small headings and overwhelming number of figures, tables, and sidebars make the structure hard to follow. I have to constantly refer back to the table of contents to make sense of what the chapter has covered and where it is going. The book has a lot of information, but it is certainly a mile wide and an inch deep, which I guess is somewhat the nature of introductory texts. Nearly 50% of students receiving special education accommodations do so because they are classified with learning disabilities, but there is only one chapter in the text on this.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book For Understanding Students With Disabilites   February 8, 2010
Stacey Conroy (Trenton, NJ USA)
This book explains almost all disabilities on an introductory level. It has great information and strategies on how to work with each of these students that will not only benefit them, but all the children in your classroom. There are biographies of teachers working in the field with their personal take on working with exceptional children and articles on current trends or hot topics for each disability. Plus, there are current websites listed in the book that you can plug into to get further information on a multitude of subjects. This is one book that I will keep for my personal library not only as a great reference for writing a paper, but also to use as a resource when I get a new student with a disability that I am not familiar with.
