Product Description
The art of magic

Magic has enchanted humankind for millennia, evoking terror, laughter, shock, and amazement. Once persecuted as heretics and sorcerers, magicians have always been conduits to a parallel universe of limitless possibility whether invoking spirits, reading minds, or inverting the laws of nature by sleight of hand. Long before science fiction, virtual realities, video games and the internet, the craft of magic was the most powerful fantasy world man had ever known. As the pioneers of special effects throughout history, magicians have never ceased to mystify us by making the impossible possible.

This book celebrates more than 500 years of the dazzling visual culture of the world s greatest magicians. Featuring over 1,000 rarely seen vintage posters, photographs, handbills, and engravings in one 650-page volume, it traces the history of magic as a performing art from the 1400s to the 1950s. Combining sensational images with lucid and incisive text, Magic explores the evolution of the magician s craft, from medieval street performers to the brilliant stage magicians who gave rise to cinematic special effects; from the 19th century s Golden Age of Magic to groundbreaking daredevils like Houdini and the early 20th century' vaudevillians.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Illustratated History of Magic Ever Published!   July 2, 2010
J. Cone (Salt Lake City, Utah, US)
What can a magic lover like myself say about such wonderful book? I've had a lifelong passion for magic since the age of 11. I've collected books on magic, it's history and have studied and performed sleight of hand for over 40 years now. This book is just plain outstanding. It is a book to be savored, looked at, enjoyed and read over and over again. If you share my passion for magic and the fine art of it's past, buy this book. Jess Cone, Salt Lake City, Utah

4 out of 5 stars Magic 1400 - 1950   February 23, 2010

Being a magician for of the last fifty years I certainly enjoy this 17 pound book which is on our coffee table. The quailty and information is endless, The publisher certainly didn't skimp on the color or thickness of the paper either. My only disappointment was I wish they would have gone a few more decades like till 1990 or 2000 which does have a lot of superb magician.

And the price also was a good value to me.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent   February 1, 2010

One word.... magnificent! Great pictures and informative text encompass this important tome of magical history. Best historical magic book in decades, possibly ever! The quality is first-rate. The pictures are unparalleled. Wish I had a book like this when I was young. I highly recommend this book to all!

4 out of 5 stars Massive complete book on Magic in 3 languages too.   January 26, 2010

This is a huge book in scope and weight. It covers so much history of magic to keep all who are interested in the subject busy for a long time. Most have already covered the content of the book. But only 1 has covered that it is in 3 languages. This is one reason why it is so big. So unless you read the 3 languages of this book, you may only be reading the English part or the languages that you can read. Seems like a filler to me. But there are more pictures too.

I love the book, a little large and heavy, but it is still a great book, but I love Magic Posters.
